The Traditional Chinese Herbal Theory's way of thinking about a Collapsed Trachea....Here is a different way of thinking of your dog's trachea problems!
Let us start by asking ourselves what exactly does it mean for your dog to have been diagnosed called a "Collapsed Trachea"? For that answer, lets reference the Veterinary Merck Manuel under "Tracheal Collapse". Interesting to note there's really not a condition specifically called by this name, rather it falls under the broad category of "Respiratory Disease", and the manual states that is is not really known what causes the trachea to collapse;
"Tracheal collapse is most common in toy and miniature breeds of dogs and rare in cats. The etiology is unknown. Affected animals have a nonproductive, honking, chronic cough, and inspiratory or expiratory dyspnea. Frequently they are obese and may have concurrent cardiovascular or other pulmonary disease (especially chronic bronchitis). Weight loss (if obese) is critical in management. Other measures include exercise restriction, reduction of excitement and stress, and medical therapy, eg, antitussives, antibiotics, bronchodilators, and corticosteroids." (Veterinary Merck Manual)
Most readers come to this site because modern medicine has not provided any long term relief for their dog's problem and that is the inability to breath properly ...So let us start showing you the powerful and effective world of Traditional Chinese Herbal Theory and what it has to offer your own coughing, wheezing and gagging dog.
What was first the hen or the egg?
Before the veterinary diagnosis of a "collapsed trachea" in most instances there will have been chronic coughing for years prior to the dreaded diagnosis. It's is logical to assume that because of this constant assault on these tissues that they would indeed become weakened.
So...let's ask ourselves...if...just if....the cough could be managed, and your dog had that single chance to rest...might there be a chance that those tissues could naturally regain back their strength?
That being said, it's a well known fact that Chinese herbs for thousands of years (its historically documented) have been utilized to help the body naturally heal itself. Herbs do this by helping to restore normal breathing functions and normalize secretions, and they have done this for the many well known chronic conditions where coughing has made breathing become difficult. These herbs will help to normalize tracheal secretions such that your dog's breathing and trachea may return to a more healthy state, thus the cough will diminish.
But we do it different here! So for right now, as you read through this page, throw out everything you think you know about coughing and breathing, and get ready to explore a whole new breathing paradigm, because it's likely that you'll find it to be very different than anything you've ever read before... Ready? Let's go!
What is a cough anyway? According to Traditional Chinese Herbal Theory , it's described as the following:
"Cough (ke sou) Sudden expulsion of air from the lung with an explosive noise, usually in a series of efforts" **
I think that it's safe to say according to this TCM definition that your dog has the problem of "ke sou", right? Let's keep going;
TCM Cough (ke sou) Classification By Cause:
Wind Damage Cough
Wind-Cold Cough
Wind-Heat Cough
Dryness Damage Cough
Dryness-Heat Cough
Static Blood Cough
Phlegm-Rheum Cough
Phlegm-Heat Cough
Cold Cough
Heat Cough
Fire Cough
As you can see from the list above, according to traditional herbal theory a dog's breathing problem is not just a cough, a cough may be caused by many different reasons, it could be the result of an external invasion (germs), or from an internal deficiency (things just not working right) , but notice that we don't list the cough due to the trachea, because we look at things from the "root cause perspective". Let's continue on and make it even more complex, and go on to say that chronic "ke sou" (coughing) can also be the result from any sort disharmony of the bowels or of the viscera and can be additionally classified by the following;
TCM Cough (ke sou) Classification By Bowels Or Viscera
Lung Cough (most common)
Heart Cough (a lung and heart cough many times occur together)
Liver Cough
Spleen Cough (poor digestion causes this cough)
Kidney Cough (very young or very old dogs experience this cough)
etc, etc etc......your getting the idea?
(*Definitions provided by A Practical Dictionary Of Chinese Medicine; Wiseman & Feng, 2nd Edition)
Wow...those are a lot of different coughs...So how do we know which one of these classifications of "ke sou" that your own dog's breathing pattern may fall under under?
We'll help you here, because empirically we have found that the vast majority of dogs with this particular type of chronic coughing and breathing problem (one that is honking and which is considered an excess type ) generally fits into the category of something called "Phlegm Heat Harassing The Lungs Which Causes Lung Qi to reverse itself".
Sounds weird right? But using this technique, which is not even considering the word trachea, we have found that most canines respond positively to a combination of herbs that addresses this particular Chinese pattern of breathing disharmony, which is a pattern that traditional medicine calls a Phlegm excess.
We get rid of this pathological phlegm by utilizing the principles of traditional medicine and using herbal principals that will help the dog's body to on its own "clear heat, transform phlegm, and send the Lung qi back downwards".
What the heck does that mean? Let me water it down for you. It means that we will sooth the throat, promote normal tracheal secretions, as well as tonify and supplement Lung system healing through the use of herbal and food therapy in order to stop coughing.
Next step and just as important as the herbs, we work with people with respect to what they feed their dog, because we do have a strong belief that the processed and filler based foods that your dog may be currently eating may be causing a problem of an accumulation of phlegm and damp which is very aggravating to the Lung system ...why is that your wondering?
Ever hear of saying "We are what we eat?
I bet your wondering, why does it matter what my dog is eating...so let me tell you why this is important to me;
I feel that most chronic breathing problems associated with dog's Lung system are most likely worsened by a diet that is too rich in processed grains. It's my belief that dogs and cats don't have the ability to properly transform and transport food (digest) that comes from a a diet laden with wheat, rice, oats...etc. Lets be real here.....people can't eat a diet that is mainly grain related food choices and remain healthy, so why in the world do we think our pets are able to do it successfully...they can't (in my humble opinion)!
Chinese medicine would say that a diet such as this, filled with low quality foods, causes the pet to accumulate dampness in the middle jiao (That is TCM slang which tells you that a canine diet rich in processed grains is the root cause of the accumulation of phlegm). TCM would say that this accumulation of phlegm and damp is from enduring food taxation; In other words a poor diet over a lifetime, damages the Spleen, thus food and grain cannot properly be transformed (digested), and thus pathological phlegm becomes an internal excess disrupting the qi mechanism of the Lungs. Wow, that's a mouthful!
There is a Chinese medicine saying..." The Spleen is the maker of phlegm and the Lung is the holder of phlegm".....get it? Let me translate...poor digestive health may cause the accumulation of phlegm, and this is another cornerstone of the TCM philosophy, which says that food is everything!
I ask every dog owner that buys these herbs, to please without fail, put their their coughing dog on a GRAIN FREE menu which I consider is key to help restore balance while taking these herbals. I advocate a home made diet designed by Dr. Ava Frick or the Raw Food Diet advocated by Dr. Russell Swift.....Or store bought dog food that you can get at your better pet food stores such as Merrick B.G. (before grains) or Wellness Core (grain free only).
Moving right along....what else can we do? Organ meat! I believe right along with Dr. Swift that pets should have organ meat, I wonder why in the world did we ever cut it out of our dog's diet? If you can't cook it as suggested by Dr. Ava Frick's diet link (above), then I strong suggest that you add it to your pet's daily food supply. For dog's with problems breathing, I suggest that you consider the Spleen, Thymus, and Bone Marrow concentrate.
And lastly, are the herbs safe? Of course, when properly administered, these herbs are safe for your dog. Chinese herbals have been given without harm to cats and dogs for hundreds of years. And not to state the obvious, but the medicines that you most likely already giving your dog has significant side effects when they're used long term and that information is published for everyone to read.
