    [X] Close Traditional Chinese herbal theory does not view your pet's behavioral changes as a "personality" or to an "emotional" problem  but rather there is some sort of an internal  traditional  theory of  organ disharmony. Thus in the case of stress and anxiety we look to the Heart system since it is the organ is assigned job of governing the blood and vessels along with storing the spirit (the spirit is called shen) i.e. the heart is responsible for moving the blood around the body and  it is the seat of consciousness and mental vitality.

    Anxiety is a disturbance  shen (spirit) and the Shen is housed in the Heart...therefore we look to patterns of disharmony from the Heart system and most of the  is is the pattern called "Heart Fire".

    Heart-Fire: The Heart is viewed as belonging to fire in the doctrine of the five phases. Thus when there are pathological changes within the body such as other sources of heat, the true nature of the Heart is it's natural tendency in  becoming too hot and that's generally due to some other internal disturbances joining with the naturally hot nature of the Heart system. (Liver excess heat and Kidney deficiency heat)

    The signs and symptoms that indicate the pretense of Heart Fire are are usually characterized by upper body signs and symptoms and your dog or cat will have some of these elements that fit into the pattern of Heart Fire;

    * red tipped tongue, or  a tongue with cracks or both (although pets do not show this often)
    * agitation or vexation (anxiety),
    aggressive behavior coupled with anxiety
    * sores in the mouth, or tender mouth, dry mouth or throat
    * red eyes
    * insomnia
    recurring bladder infections (Heart has a link to the bladder system)

    In summary,  most of the time we will see a pet that appears to have signs of "heat' when there is the presence of "anxiety". (this is true for people as well! ).

    Keep in mind that unlike modern medicines,  herbal remedies for dogs and cats that are exhibiting anxiety are only to be taken for a short amount of time. Herbal remedies for pets and people are not meant to be used for the rest of our collective lives...the job of the herbs is to get in there and balance the system and then to be done with it...herbs are not at all like drugs in that they are not to be used for long term.
