     Kidney Not Grasping the Qi

This herbal pattern;  The Kidney not Grasping the Lung Q, is one of of Lung Q deficiency with trapped Lung-Heat. When cough symptoms persist over long periods of time, the fragile tissues of the Chinese theory Lung system weaken from chronic "rebellion" of the directional flow of the breaths. Lung Qi's natural course of flow is to go downwards and not to flow up and out. This misdirection of breaths produces wheezing and and an urgency to the breathing process

Chinese herbal theory believes the Lung system and Kidney System to be connected.  "The Lung is the Governor of Qi and the Kidney is the Root of Qi". The Lung controls all breathing and is responsible for distribution of Qi required throughout the body. However, to manifest "true Qi" the Lung Qi must combine with the fundamental Qi of the Kidney for the production of whole body "true Qi". In other words, breathing must follow its normal pathway of downwards, and if it does not, the entire body becomes deficient of Qi.

One way of thinking of this, is to picture the herbal Kidney system to be the mechanism to harnessing breaths (Qi). It is the Kidney Qi which absorbs the breaths, and if Qi cannot be absorbed the breathing becomes labored, rapid upon the slightest exertion. This is called "Kidney failing to absorb Qi" and "Qi not descending to the root"

The herbal action for this pattern is to Supplement the Kidney in order to promote the absorption of Lung Qi. The formula addresses Heat in the Lungs, and because of this, Lung Qi becomes deficient from the long term rebellion of Lung Qi (breaths). The breaths become difficult, especially inhalation, and this produces symptoms of wheezing.

    Formula Main Ingredients:

The main ingredient of the formula is Gecko, it works on the Lung and Kidney channels to tonify both systems. It is a fabulous herb, not seen in many formulas because of its scarcity. The next herb is Ginseng  strongly supplements source Qi and increases the Qi of both the Lungs and the Spleen.

Fu ling, sang bai pi, and xing ren manages the Lung Qi and directs Rebellious Lung Qi downwards (breathing)

Chuan bei mu and zhi mu clear Lung-Heat and nourish the Kidneys to absorb the descending Lung Qi
