Traditional Chinese herbal theory catalogs seizures as something they call "Wind".  Chinese herbal medicine uses metaphors in order to explain how the interior of the living body relates to the exterior world in which we live. Chinese theory sees the exterior and interior environments as one and the same. Keeping this in mind, "Wind" is swift and changeable, it comes and goes, it is always moving and its' location is never fixed.

To understand the concept of Wind, think of  leaves on the branch on a tree. Wind may be mild and cause the leaves to slightly flutter. Contrast this to a gusting wind, which breaks the leaves from the branch. Wind is not constant, it waxes and wanes, and is always moving and forever changing.

In the terms of Traditional Chinese herbal patterns, Wind is  a type of Qi, and Wind is considered to be a cause of disease. Examples of  various syndromes resulting from the Wind pattern are seizures, itching, stroke, and pain that moves from place to place and is not fixed.

To assign herbal formulas,  seizure symptoms (Wind) are first classified as either Yin or Yang types. Yang symptoms are characterized as more severe, more violent and have convulsive type of manifestations. Yin symptoms are more trance like, less noticeable because they are weak in nature. Dogs are most prone to Yang type symptoms  and cats experience more Yin seizures.

The first pattern of seizure symptoms is represented by Calm & Compose: Arrest Wind and Phlegm Formula: Traditional Chinese herbal theory states "without Phlegm there are no seizures". Phlegm is an obstructive turbid substance that inhibits the flow of Qi. When Qi is obstructed, it becomes pent up and builds pressure. A sudden release of the blocked Qi is forced to moves up towards the head while it generates Wind (seizure symptoms.

Another common pattern, the second, is represented by Calm & Compose: Spleen Phlegm and Wind Formula This formula works at the root problem of Spleen Qi Deficiency. According to Chinese herbal theory, without Phlegm, there are no seizures." Spleen deficiency pattern is a conditional pattern or one that exists from to Spleen damage due to dietary taxation. Consumption of over processed, and grain based foods, can serverly damage the function of the Spleen. When the Spleen is deficient, the source of Qi and Blood becomes empty, Blood deficiency can give rise to mild forms of Wind, since it is Blood that anchors the Qi. In other words, without the rooting nature of Blood, formless Qi floats, resulting in in Wind floating upwards, thus resulting in symptoms of seizures.

What does this mean to you?

"The link between diet and a dog that experiences seizures remains a strong clinical impression on the part of alternative veterinary medical practitioners" (Manuel of Natural Veterinary Medicine).

The holistic thinking is that in the many cases of epilepsy, there is a suggestion that there may actually be a type of a food sensitivity reaction, TCM calls this "diet taxation." Our suggestion: A diet of grain and dairy free food. Chinese theory considers these foods phlegm makers and phlegm is bad!
