Historical Use Of Chinese Herbs To Expel WormsThere is a very famous Chinese text called the Shanghan Lun, it was written in a very old Chinese language and published during the Han Dynasty (200-219 AD). This classic text actually describes the diseases that result from the infestation of roundworms that have the ability to invade various bodily organs.
In the case of human infestations of roundworms, these pests make their home the gallbladder and intestines, and in dogs they choose to reside in the heart and the intestines. This old enduring document is a source text which provides us the knowledge as to what herbs we should use to successfully expel roundworms from various part of the human or canine body (this literature is over over 2000 years old of organized medical documentation).
The Chinese have been working to expel roundworms for thousands of years. A famous practitioner named Dr. Ke Qi who lived during the 17th century best describes how the use Chinese herbs to effectively expel these tenacious pests ( remember that HeartWorms are a type of roundworm).
"When roundworms encounter sourness, they are calmed. When they encounter acridity, they are spent; When encounter bitterness they are purged" (he is referring to the flavor of the different herbs)
When a dog (or person) has worms the Chinese call the disease of worm infestation "chong ji". The treatment principle for righting this condition is to; "Expel worms and disperse accumulation". Translation; this means that we will use herbs to cure the dog of round worms (heartworms are a type of roundworm) will help the canine to expel them through a natural process, they are NOT PESTICIDES that cause long term damage to your dog.
Pharmacological Effects Of Antiparasitic Herbs:The herbs we use have a marked effectiveness to kill and expel parasites. These antiparasitic medicinals have the effect of paralyzing the muscles of the parasites, which subsequently leads to the death of the worms, and then to the eventual expulsion of the remains from the dog's body. Think of it this way, once these worms become paralyzed they can not hook onto the heart muscles, or intestines etc..
(Chinese Medical Herbology & Pharmacology; John K Chen, Tina T Chen)Herbs We Use:Shi Jun Zi ( Fructus Quisqualis):Text in which this herb was first appeared was
Materia Medica of the Kaibao Era. This herb has the function to kill parasites. This is an herb that is sweet and aromatic and moistening. It lubricates the intestines and kills parasites. The pharmacological effect when studied showed that this herb has a marked ability to paralyze, but not kill, roundworms in pigs. (
Zhong Yao Yao Li Yu Ying Yong (Pharmacology and Applications of Chinese Herbs), 1983:686; Zhong Cao Yao Xue (Study of CHinese Herbal Medicine, 1976; 701)
Bing Lang (Seman Arecae): Text in which this herb first appeared was the
Discussion of Medicinal Properties; Known to kill parasites such as tapeworms, pin worms, roundworms and blood flukes. This herb is very effective because it has both anti parasitic and purgative effects (helps the body expel the worms). The strong pharmacological effect was demonstrated when according to one study' a 30% solution of Bing Lang killed tapeworms in dogs within 40 minutes.
(Zhe jiang Yi Ke Da Xue Xue Bao (Journal of Zhejiang Province School of Medicine); 9(1):1).
One interesting study followed patients that were treated for roundworms with an herbal formula of Bing Lang and Lei Wan. The herbs were cooked in 200 ml of water to yield 40 ml of a final solution. Patients were instructed to take the decoction in the morning on an empty stomach followed by breakfast two hours later. All patients received 3 days of treatment, followed by 5-7 days of rest, and concluded by 3 more days of treatment. The study reported successful expulsion of roundworms in 22 out of 36 patients.
(Jian Su Zhong Yi ZA Zhi (Jiangsu Journal of CHnese MEdicine), 1960; (6):857Chuan Lian Zi (Fructus Toosendan): Kills parasites and relieves pain. Most effective for roundworms and hookworms. Used with Bing Lang and She Jun Zi....
Shi Liu Pi (Pericarpium Granati): Kills parasites and relieves pain. This is herb is actually pomogranite seed.
