Your dog has a TCM Pattern of  phlegm-heat if there are:

  • Symptoms of loud excess coughs such as honking
  • Lots of panting, excess thirst & hunger
  • Seems restless
  • Your dog wants to lie in cool places

Traditional Chinese Herbal theory defines a Phlegm-Heat Obstructing the Lungs pattern:

The Traditional Chinese Herbal pattern of phlegm-heat occurs when phlegm and heat bind to congest the lungs. A hot-phlegm pattern manifests as a panting and honking type  pattern. We call this an excess cough that is due to an excess yang (heat).

Phlegm-heat cough patterns are external pathogens harassing the lungs by upsetting the delicate balance of the the fragile lung tissues.

Excess heat damages the lung liquids and condenses to form phlegm. It is a sticky type phlegm that is not easy to expel, thus the honking attempt to expel the  hot sticky phlegm.

The  pathological combination of phlegm and heat will obstruct the lung's network vessels,  thus causing the lung qi to rebel and flow upward which is the counter flow to the natural order of breaths (Qi). Thus, the the symptoms of coughing and other related breathing problems will present if phlegm and heat combine.
